Local life in Romeo
The Romeo Peach Festival has run since 1931, which makes it Michigan's longest-running festival, and it started for a practical reason: the orchards in this part of Macomb County were producing more stone fruit than the market could absorb. It still draws around 25,000 people to the village over five days across Labor Day weekend, organized by the Romeo Lions.
The village itself is historic and well kept, with the housing stock to match — older homes with character in the core, subdivisions around it, and orchards and acreage in the surrounding townships.
M-53 runs south into Macomb County and metro Detroit, which is the commute this market is built around. Lapeer is about 30 minutes north, and the drive between the two is one of the more pleasant in the area.
