Local life in Imlay City

The Eastern Michigan State Fair has run on the Imlay City fairgrounds since 1896 — every year but 1944, 1945 and 2020 — and it still anchors the calendar, five days in late July or early August run by the Lapeer County Agricultural Society. Imlay City Summerfest fills in the rest of the summer. For a city this size, that is an unusual amount of civic life.

Downtown is compact and tree-lined, with shops, eateries and everyday services rather than a tourist strip. Housing runs from older homes on the in-town grid to newer subdivisions at the edges, and Imlay City Community Schools serves the city and a good deal of the surrounding countryside. Prices here are consistently among the friendlier ones in Lapeer County.

I-69 is the reason a lot of people land here. Lapeer is about 15 minutes west, Port Huron roughly 40 miles east, and the interchange is close enough to the middle of town that the commute starts the moment you leave the driveway.
