Living in Lapeer, Michigan

Downtown Lapeer is built around the 1846 county courthouse — a Greek Revival building of native white pine that is the oldest courthouse in continuous operation anywhere in Michigan. Nepessing Street runs off it with shops, restaurants and offices in a genuinely varied streetscape, and the city has been adding to it rather than coasting: the Ed LaClair Rotary Pocket Park opened in 2019, a downtown dog park two years later. Walk a few blocks north and the Piety Hill historic district shows what the city looked like when that courthouse was new.

Housing here covers more ground than anywhere else in the county. There are century homes on the streets near downtown, postwar and 1970s neighborhoods filling in around them, newer subdivisions on the edges, and country acreage the moment you cross the city line. Most of the city is served by Lapeer Community Schools. That spread means the same search can turn up a $150,000 in-town starter and a $600,000 place on ten acres, so it pays to be specific about which version of Lapeer you actually want.

For commuting, Lapeer is better placed than its size suggests. I-69 runs east–west through town, putting Flint roughly 25 minutes west and Port Huron about an hour east. M-24 heads south toward Oxford, Lake Orion and Pontiac, which is the route most people take into metro Detroit.
